Canada Introduces New Plastic Bills

Posted in News on 14.11.11 by John Meloche

With so many Canadians using Visa, MasterCard and Interac cards to pay for their purchases these days, there is a growing widespread belief that everyone will be “paying with plastic” in the near future. Today, QMI Agency published a very interesting article that indicates that this prediction will soon be coming true.

It’s not exactly what you think however. We are not headed towards a “cashless” society just yet, but it does seem as if paper money is nearing extinction in Canada. How can this be so, you ask? QMI reports that the Bank of Canada will begin circulating new bills using a polymer base rather than paper starting today!

And what is “polymer”, you ask? (We asked the same thing!). Believe it or not, you likely have several items containing this substance. According to Wikipedia, polymer is a type of plastic made up of both natural and synthetic materials. It is used in a number of regularly-used materials that are commonly seen as rubber-based.

As Diana Bocco explains on Curiosity.com, polymer is used in such items as frying pans, diapers, plastic cutlery, DVD cases, jars, bottles, spandex clothing and so much more! And now, polymer will be part of your cash currency! Pretty useful stuff, huh? QMI notes that the first of the Canadian bills to be entered into circulation is the $100 bill.

So, why the change from paper? Apparently, the new paperless notes will last two and a half times longer than the standard paper bills we have been used to. The QMI article does point out, however, that the new bills will cost twice as much to produce. They will also feature some very unique characteristics.

“They’re see-through!” pointed out one of our Synergy reps this morning. A new security feature contained in the new $100 note gives it a transparent strip close to the right side. It still features the likeness of Canada’s eighth Prime Minister, Sir Robert Borden but also features images that celebrate the nation’s contributions to advances in medicine.

The rest of the Canadian bills that will feature the new polymer makeup are on the way. The $50 note is expected to be released in March 2012, while the $20, $10 and $5 bills will be issued by the end of 2013. Many of our reps, here at Synergy can’t wait to get their hands on the new polymer bills.

“I’m on my way to the bank to pick one up today!” one of our excited staff members explained, “I guess there is always some excitement when our money changes up. But these new bills are really innovative. I’ve never seen anything like them before.” If there are longer lineups at the bank today, perhaps now you’ll know why!

VP John Meloche Joins Movember Movement

Posted in News on 11.11.11 by John Meloche

As we’ve mentioned in this week’s blogs, November is certainly a month when business picks up in the retail world. But since 2004, the eleventh month of the year has also meant something a bit more than the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Known also as “Movember”, this is a month when you will be seeing a lot more men sporting moustaches than usual!

Combining the words “moustache” and “November” to come up with the newly-named month, The Movember Foundation began the moustache-growing initiative in order to raise greater awareness about men’s health. Specifically in the area of prostate cancer, the Movember campaigns encourage men to grow moustaches and raise money to put towards charitable programs.

As explained by the Movember Canada website, Movember’s Global Action Plan is a worldwide program that raises money to assist with prostate cancer research. And this year, this worthy cause has very much inspired the Vice President of Synergy Marketing Consultants, John Meloche.

Participating in his first Movember, John’s stache is already shaping up quite nicely – as you might be able to tell from the photo above. You can learn more about John’s Movember campaign from his very own profile page which has been set up on the Movember Canada website.

A first-time “mo bro” – as Movember participants are referred to – John and his new stache would very much appreciate your support. On his profile page, he has made it very easy for you to donate an amount of your choice to put towards the campaign’s very worthy causes.

You may donate anonymously if you wish and the process to donate online is a very quick one. A few clicks of a few buttons is all it will take, but your generosity is certain to go a long way. On behalf of John Meloche, Synergy Marketing Consultants would like to thank all of those who support John’s efforts in advance.

And just so you know, John will be keeping his end of the bargain all month long. And what is that, you ask? According to Wikipedia, there are five specific rules by which a “mo bro” must live by throughout the month of November. And they are as follows:

1. You must begin the 1st of November with a clean shaven face.
2. You grow/groom a moustache for the entire month of November.
3. No joining of the mo to your sideburns.
4. No joining of the handlebars to your chin (that is considered a goatee).
5. You must conduct yourself as a true country gentleman.

Good luck John!

How To Have Even Happier Holidays

Posted in News, Promotional Products on 10.11.11 by John Meloche

In yesterday’s blog, we continued to discuss the importance of using promotional products to your advantage this holiday season. As a store owner, you are very well aware that this time of year is the busiest. Therefore, putting in that extra effort to wow your customers by giving them some great promo gifts will be all the more worth it in the coming weeks.

A QMI Agency report released earlier this week confirms how important pleasing your holiday shoppers will be this year. As we touched upon yesterday, the report reveals the findings of a recent Deloitte survey that predicts that Canadian shoppers will be much more cautious about their holiday spending budgets this holiday season.

Jean-Philippe Vorsanger, who is the retail consulting lead with Deloitte Canada, said that “retailers should anticipate low, single-digit growth over the holiday shopping season.” So what can store owners do to make the best of what is assumed will be a less-than-stellar situation?

Earlier this morning, one of our great Synergy reps offered this advice based on a conversation he had with one of his clients: “Take the time to introduce yourself to your customers this holiday season. Especially if business is slower than what you may expect, you’ll want to ensure that you really leave a lasting impression on the people who do visit your store.”

“One of my clients is planning of giving a pen to every single customer who walks into his store this holiday season,” he explained, “He’s also going to ask them to use that pen to leave their email addresses so he can keep them informed of all of the specials he will have available over the next few weeks. He insists this strategy gets him repeat business each year.”

As we’ve always said, here at Synergy, it’s one thing to give out gifts but it’s another to implement a sound strategy that will help those gifts bring you increased sales. Retailers in the electronics industry should especially be thinking of ways to keep their customers coming back this year.

The QMI Agency article states that “one-third of Canadians plan to buy someone special a gadget this Christmas with flat screen TVs, digital cameras, smartphones, e-readers and tablets among the most popular items on wish lists nationwide.” So it is likely retailers in this field will be among the busiest these holidays..

As always, we encourage you to put in a quick call to one of our experienced sales reps to discuss what promotional gifts would work best in growing your customer base this holiday season. After all, the best thing about giving out promo gifts is the gifts that they give back to you – increased sales, more customers and very happy holiday season!

Hoping For Happy Holiday Shoppers

Posted in News, Promotional Products on 09.11.11 by John Meloche

So far this week, the Synergy Marketing Consultants blog has been focusing on a concept that will remain quite popular over the next several weeks. With the holiday season fast approaching, it goes without saying that we are about to embark on the busiest shopping season of the entire year.

This is an extremely important time for business owners to take advantage of the wave of new customers who will be visiting their stores in the coming weeks. As always, our clients, here at Synergy, are busy assisting their clients with getting them the perfect promotional items to hand out all season long.

With more customers comes more opportunities to spread the word about your business, so that even more customers may be encouraged to visit your store. Practical and useful promotional items are excellent ways to keep your business on the minds of your customers on a regular basis.

Of course, you may choose from pens, mugs, knives, key chains, hats, sunglasses or any of our great holiday items including cards and CDs, among other items. Yesterday, QMI Agency released a report that perhaps, highlighted just how important it will be for store owners to please the customers who visit them this holiday season.

According to the report, a recent Deloitte study found that shoppers will be more hesitant to spend this holiday shopping season than in years past. Even with the recession apparently in the rear view mirror, many Canadians are using precaution when considering the state of the economy in the coming year.

QMI writes that the survey reveals that “more consumers expect the economy to decline in the coming year (33%) than think it will improve (29%). Last year, expectations were much higher, with 49% of Canadians reporting a positive outlook.” Evidently, Canadians will be keeping a much closer eye on their holiday spending this year.

At least, this is what Jean-Philippe Vorsanger, the retail consulting lead with Deloitte Canada, believes. Said Vorsanger: “The uncertain global economy and the resulting volatility of the stock market, the Canadian dollar, and fuel prices have taken their toll on Canadians’ confidence.”

Deloitte predicts that the average shopper will spend about $477 on holiday gifts this year. However, for households earning less than $30,000, the average spending per person will be around the $246 mark. We’ll take a closer look at this study in tomorrow’s blog and offer more ideas on how to ensure that your store has a happy holidays!

Holiday Promotions Pump Up Business

Posted in Promotional Products, Synergy Suggestions on 08.11.11 by John Meloche

In yesterday’s blog, we began looking at ways that business owners can begin promoting their businesses offline during the holiday season. On the WAHM Articles website, Corrie Petersen lists a number of ways that this can be done. We left off yesterday’s blog discussing the concept of giving away gifts for free.

What’s the holiday season without gifts anyway, right? At Synergy Marketing Consultants, our many years of experience have taught us that when you hand out promotional gifts to your customers, it greatly helps to build loyal relationships. Your customers’ feelings of being valued and appreciated as your clients go a long way.

Our clients find that this relatively-inexpensive marketing strategy has helped to increase the size of their own customer bases as the gifts often encourage referrals. What better way to promote your brand than to have its happy customers recommend it to others? And with your company name and logo affixed to one of our great gifts, you ensure that your business remains on the minds of your customers on a regular basis.

Our holiday gifts are naturally perfect for this time of year. We offer Christmas cards, CDs, holiday charms and decorations. Be sure to take a look at the Holiday section of our website to locate the gifts that you like best. After all, Petersen insists that “people love to get something for free”.

This is especially true for children! “Giving freebies to the kids is a great idea,” she writes. One idea is take one of your promotional pens and provide it to a customer along with a crossword puzzle or word search that is geared towards the holidays. Petersen recommends putting your business name and website at the bottom and give them to the children in your own child’s classroom!

You may also want to create “goodie bags”, says Petersen. This way you can give them out at various holiday events. She suggests you ask others to give you flyers and samples to include in your bag as well. This not only promotes holiday spirit through the concept of helping others but it will assist you in building business relationships with other company owners.

As Petersen outlines, “You can include your items on the inside and then make a note on the outside that says the bag was created, assembled, and distributed by your company.” Finally, holiday contests are great ideas for attracting people to your business. And there are a number of ways to pull this off using your promo gifts!

Writes Petersen: “You can give away a product or service to the winner of a drawing. This drawing could be for people joining your newsletter list. You could (also) create a survey and ask people to fill it out. Then you could draw a name from all the people that send in a completed survey.”

Boost Your Business During The Holidays

Posted in Promotional Products, Synergy Suggestions on 07.11.11 by John Meloche

Last week, the Synergy Marketing Consultants Blog began discussing the ways in which your business could use the internet to help promote itself during the holidays. It can not be repeated enough that a company’s online presence is extremely important in today’s marketplace.

Now, with the holiday shopping season upon us, it is more important than ever to ensure that customers are visiting your store. Of course, it is of paramount importance for store owners to be able to promote themselves offline too! On the WAHM Articles website, Corrie Petersen talks about a few techniques that can be used to promote your business during the holidays.

Is there anyone who doesn’t love the holiday season? It’s such a joyous time, it’s hard to imagine anyone even being in a bad mood. Well, ask just any business owner and he or she will tell you that this simply isn’t true. This time of year just may be the most strenuous for store owners! But, it doesn’t necessarily have to be.

Petersen writes that some people actually fear that business will slow down during the holidays. However, if appropriate promotion is put towards increasing sales at the appropriate time, the holiday season can be a very lucrative one. This entails creating your holidays specials and promotions early.

According to Petersen, the day after Halloween is the perfect time to begin your holiday promotions. This echoes sentiments from our blogs last week. Yes, it may be early November, but in the retail world, Christmas is practically here! Of course, you want to give customers ample time to either save up for your product or service – or get it quickly from your store before visiting any others!

Petersen’s next point is one that we couldn’t agree with more. “People love to get something for free,” she writes, “During the holiday season receiving something free is even bigger. It means you really care and you want to help them in anyway you can. Plus, if it works out they can give that free gift to someone else as a gift. It’s great!”

At Synergy Marketing Consultants, we proudly offer our clients the best promotional products in the business. Many of them are used as holiday gifts and have been wowing customers for years. Be sure to check out the Holiday gift section of our website to peruse through the items that would best please your customers!

We’ll take a further look at these ideas in tomorrow’s blog.

Your Website Will Help Make Holidays Bright

Posted in Synergy Suggestions on 04.11.11 by John Meloche

In yesterday’s blog, we discussed the importance of advertising your business during the holiday season. It’s basically a yearly tradition for the holiday shopping season to begin the day after Halloween. And this year, of course, is no different. As a result, business owners should not rest on their laurels, but instead really turn up their efforts to bring in more customers during the busiest time of the year for shopping.

On Web209.com, a recent article details a number of ways that business owners can drum up more sales online during the holidays. Yesterday, we mentioned how important the development of an email list can be to retailers wishing to keep their client bases informed of the latest products and associated sales going in in their stores.

The site also reveals how important it is to have a fully-functional website that allows for those sales to take place. During the holidays, many people prefer shopping online so as to avoid long line ups in the shopping malls. Does your website allow for your customers to process sales directly? Make it easy for your clients to locate and purchase items right from your website and sales will jump through the roof!

It’s also a good idea to request customer feedback online. If your customers are satisfied with their purchases, you may want to encourage them to write a short testimonial about the product and/or service that you provided them. This will show other customers that you are a trustworthy and dependable brand.

It must be reiterated that, in today’s world, having a company website is a key ingredient to the success of any business. To remain competitive, a customer must be able to locate you online, or chances are that he or she will find what you offer from another business. Your website allows you to service both local customers and those living far distances.

According to Web209.com, “A website is a creative and fun way to promote a business. The online site lends credibility and gives a sense of stability to any business. In today’s world, having an online presence is vital if a business is going to be competitive in the world and remain that way. People want to be able to see what a business has and do price comparisons.”

The site reminds us that it is essential for a business to have a well-oiled, regularly-updated website during the holiday season as more shopping will be done over the next two months than any other time of the year. Have a strong website up and running and you’ll be sure to have a happy holiday season!

Online Advertising A Key To Holiday Success

Posted in Synergy Suggestions on 03.11.11 by John Meloche

As we mentioned earlier this week, with November now underway, the holiday season is practically here. The holiday shopping season, anyway, is certainly in full flight as store owners prep their places of business for a whole new rush of customers. Just because Christmas is coming, however, it doesn’t mean that business owners should just assume that business will pick up.

It is always important to advertise your business. And now is probably the most important time of year to do so. We recently came across a newly-published article on Web209.com that talks about how your local business can work to drum up sales online during the holidays. There are many important factors to consider.

For example, we often herald the concept of “word of mouth” promotion. Our very own clients, here at Synergy Marketing Consultants, often tell us how much giving out their promotional items encourages recipients to tell others about where they got their gifts from. There is probably no better advertising than when a happy customer shares his or her story about your business with another consumer.

But Web209.com mentions that taking advantage of your company website is one of the best ways to get people talking about your business during the holidays. The site insists that it is “vital” to keep in touch with your customer base, in an effort to have more of them visit your store for Christmas shopping.

It’s no secret that, these days, a good number of shoppers browse online, to compare prices for items between different stores, before actually visiting a store of choice. One of the most affordable ways to ensure that your customers are informed about your offers is through email advertising.

Although this can easily be a year-round practice, you should encourage your customers to leave their names and email addresses with you when they visit your store. Perhaps, creating a contest of some kind that requires them to enter simply by providing this information is the way to go.

The last thing you want to do, however, is annoy your customer base. Be sure not to inundate them with advertisements, but instead send them messages from time to time that will inform them of the best deals that you have available. Ensure your clients that they are “insiders” who are getting the first scoop on what’s happening with your business.

We’ll take a further look into this concept in tomorrow’s blog.
