Mercifully, the Toronto Blue Jays’ season has officially come to a close. Finishing with a record of 74-88, the Jays recorded one more win than they did in 2012. One. This is after an offseason when Synergy’s home team picked up a slew of new players, boosted their payroll and promised fans a competitive season to be remembered alongside the glory days of the early 90s.
Clearly, that wasn’t to happen. And the Blue Jays are now forced to wait through another offseason to discover what moves will be made next to repair the franchise. “It’s embarrassing,” commented one of our team members who is also a long time fan, “There was a lot of hope going into this season. I don’t know what went wrong. And to make it worse, the Red Sox are being picked as favourites to win the World Series.”
Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell, left his managerial position with Toronto in favour of the Sox this past year. Needless to say, his decision did not sit well with Jays fans. Adding insult to injury is that while the Jays finished dead last this year in the American League East, the Red Sox are division champions. These same Sox, by the way, finished dead last in the A.L. East in 2012.
“Hey, maybe that’s a sign of good things to come,” said another member of our staff with a sense of optimism that not too many of his counterparts seem to share, “If the Sox can pull it off, why can’t we? The Jays have to learn from their many blunders this year and bounce back strong next year. I’m thinking it’s time we get another new manager because Gibbons didn’t work out.”
John Gibbons returned to the Blue Jays in 2013 after a previous stint that saw him manage the team to a .500 winning percentage. Not exactly stellar numbers, his statistics as manager made many a Jays fan question the decision to have him come back. It’s questionable if he’ll be back next season. One thing is for sure though, the Jays need to do a lot more than just worry about their manager in 2014.
“Our division has gone from hard to harder,” offered our first rep, “The A.L. East is already known as the toughest division in baseball and now it’s even hard for the Yankees to compete. Every other team had a winning record this year except for us. If we’re going to get anywhere, we have to able to beat teams in our division. If not, we’re toast!”
Toronto sports fans need not worry too much about the unfortunate Blue Jays season. And that’s because the Toronto Maple Leafs season starts tomorrow! Appropriately getting things underway with a tilt against the rival Montreal Canadiens, the Leafs are kicking off the new season with more optimism than they’ve had in a very long time. Are they playoff bound again?
Most fans think so. And even though their heartbreaking loss to the Boston Bruins in last season’s opening round of the playoff still stings for many, Leafs fans are excited about the donning of a new era in Toronto. At Synergy Marketing, our ravenous sports fan-filled staff is certainly hoping that the Buds do a whole lot better than their baseball counterparts from down the street. Go Leafs Go!
