3 More Ways To Gain Followers On Twitter

Posted in Social Media on 15.01.15 by John Meloche

Twitter bird chattingThis week, the Synergy Marketing Blog has been taking a strong look at the ways in which Canadian business owners can grow their friends and followers online. And we’re taking a lot of the advice that we’ve doled out ourselves. With more than 100 likes on our Facebook page, we’re now intent on bettering 100 friends on Twitter. Yes, these may seem like small numbers. But, for a brand that is still getting used to the digital era, our progress has been very steady.

Perhaps, it’s because we’re utilizing so much of the advice that we blog about. We post links to our blogs on our social media profiles daily. We include hashtags in our posts. And we also pose questions in an effort to engage our audience in conversations. These and other tips have helped to grow our online fan base. And they can help you do the same. Yesterday, we began to look at ways to grow Twitter followings. Today, we’ll take a look at three more great suggestions.

1. Give the people what they want. Perhaps, one way to ensure that you’re gaining a larger Twitter following is to take the same approach as you would to welcoming customers into your store. What do your customers want? Which advertising strategies do they best respond to? On Bufferapp.com, Kevan Lee writes that “52% of followers want special offers.” He notes that Nielsen research conducted a study that revealed this and other interesting findings.

Why do people tend to follow certain brands? According to the study, “55% follow because they like the brand; 52% follow for special offers or promotions (and) 51% follow to stay up to date with news from the brand.” Discounts, Lee informs, is one of the biggest reasons for people to follow a particular brand on Twitter. In addition, followers enjoy getting freebies and reading exclusive content.

2. Share valuable content. To reiterate the last point made by Lee, Michael Hyatt highlights the strong importance of content marketing on his website. “This is probably my most important piece of advice,” he believes, “Point people to helpful resources. Be generous. Be inspiring. Use lots of links. Create content that other people look forward to getting and want to pass on to their own followers. This is the key to getting retweeted.”

As we’ve mentioned, the Synergy Marketing Blog has a link to each and every one of its posts on both our company’s Facebook and Twitter pages. We have been utilizing the concept of content marketing for years now. The fact that our website not only offers visitors the ability to peruse through our vast array of available promotional products, but also provides an ample amount of very useful content, has helped us to grow our reach on both social media platforms.

3. Post often. While Lee insists that it’s important to avoid “bursts” (too many posts all at once – see yesterday’s blog), you never want your profiles to go without regular updating. “The more you post, the more followers you’ll have,” he says bluntly, pointing to the fact that “social media analytics company, Beevolve analyzed 36 million Twitter profiles and 28 billion tweets to find the correlation between tweet frequency and twitter followers.”

The results were quite telling. “A Twitter user who has sent 1 to 1,000 tweets has an average of 51 to 100 followers,” reports Lee, “Users who have tweeted more than 10,000 times are followed on average by 1,000 to 5000 users (and) it’s estimated that a person with more than 15,000 tweets has between 100,001 to 1 million followers.” How often are you tweeting? Don’t forget that the same rules apply for how often you’re interacting with others based on their tweets.
