3 More Ways To Advertise To Young People

Posted in Small Business Advertising, Synergy Suggestions on 08.09.15 by John Meloche

Friendly group of students talking - isolated over a white backgroundWelcome to the end of summer! Okay, we know that, for most Canadians, there is nothing “welcome” about the end of summer. And, in no way should an exclamation mark have been put at the end of our opening statement. Many people – young people especially – dread today because it represents the first day of school for the majority of Canadian students. And while the summer isn’t officially over, summer vacation is certainly done for all intents and purposes.

Now, that doesn’t mean that all young people are upset. On the contrary, many Canadian students are actually quite excited for the beginning of school today. A new school year opens youngsters up to so many new possibilities for their futures. As a business owner, a new school year also opens your business up to a wide variety of opportunities as well. Are you marketing your brand in such a way that it attracts these excited members of the student population?

Here are three more ways to advertise to young people:

1. Advertise in schools. Is there a better place to connect with the student population than the schools themselves? You’d be hard pressed to walk into a restroom on a university campus without seeing an advertisement of some kind. There are many different ways to get your brand better known on school grounds. Contact schools in your area to find out if there are advertising opportunities available.

On HuffingtonPost.com Shawn Prez advocates this practice. “Product placement has proven to be effective with young audiences, which spend a significant amount of time consuming media,” he informs, “Take advantage of this method, as it allows marketers to spend the money and effort displaying their products in time slots or locations that are shown to reach very important and influential demographics.”

2. Be part of “real world” activities. In yesterday’s blog, we championed the use of social media and the creation of your own apps to engage Canada’s school-attending younger population. And while this will always be a wise move, it’s important to remember that not everything is done online. Believe it or not, there is still no substitute for connecting with people in person. And this is certainly true for young people.

On TheFinancialBrand.com, Tim McAlpine insists that you invest in marketing opportunities that will connect you to young people in the real world. “As you develop your young adult marketing strategies, make sure that there is a healthy dose of real-world activities in your integrated marketing mix,” he advises, “Consider event sponsorships, street teams, brand ambassadors on campus, guerrilla activities and stunts, student orientation events and sports.”

3. Try a guerrilla marketing approach. If you’re planning on connecting with youngsters in person, you may want to try guerrilla marketing. Implementing an unconventional method to market your brand is great way to engage young people who may be disengaged from the “same old same old” approach. Prez believes that guerrilla marketing is one of the most effective ways to communicate with a young, urban crowd.

“ It has a strong impact on driving sales and brand awareness while utilizing minimal resources,” he believes, “Guerrilla marketing focuses on non-traditional tactics, using various brand ambassadors to interact one on one in a very intimate way (being on the ground and actually touching consumers where they eat, sleep, and play such as campuses, concerts, sporting events, nightclubs, etc.)”

One thing is for sure. When meeting your young would-be customers, be sure to give them something to remember you by. To order some fantastic promotional products, call Synergy Marketing at 1-877-748-9884!

5 Ways To Use Social Media To Boost Sales

Posted in Synergy Suggestions on 09.09.14 by John Meloche

Vector stickers with social media and internetAs you all know, school is in. And that means young people are socializing with each other in person a whole lot more than they may have been throughout the summer. Of course, it’s great when people are able to meet with each other face to face. There’s nothing like that good old in-person conversation to really be able to see and hear how a person is really feeling. Nevertheless, there’s no stopping social media.

Yes, social media have pretty much taken over as the most popular ways to communicate nowadays. And although face-to-face confrontations can’t be beat, it’s fair to say that it’s so much easier to communicate to a larger group of people online than it is in person. It’s the very nature of social media. Being able to spread the word on a large scale is what has made the Facebooks and Twitters of the world so popular.

With that said, there is no time to take off from social media if you’re a business owner. Considering that students are bumping into each other more often now that school has started, you have the ability to use social media to spread the word about your business even faster these days. On ViralHeat.com, Savannah Marie lists a number of ways that you can help to push sales by using social media. Here are our favourite five.

1. Use the Same Hashtag. Marie suggests that you use distinctive hashtags to describe the focus of your business. For example, #BackToSchoolSale will help for online users to easily find you in conversations that involve that topic. She also writes that you should use a combination of hashtags across all of your social media platforms. They work amazingly in getting potential customers to notice you.

2. Flash Sale. “Flash sales are a great way to drive sales because they create a sense of urgency,” writes Marie, “Offer a special price for only a short period of time. Announce your intention to have a flash sale in weeks before across your social media sites, but don’t say when it will occur. This will ensure that people will continuously check your feeds to see when it’s taking place. When you hold the flash sale, be prepared for heavy traffic to your site.”

3. Offer Coupons. Everyone loves receiving discounts. Marie reminds us that you can entice customers into buying your products by giving out coupon codes to those who like your Facebook page or follow you on Twitter. Don’t forget to add hashtags such as #couponcode when advertising this special deal. As Marie notes, “this will both increase your number of followers and draw in more customers.”

4. Promote Free Shipping. If there’s anything that customers like more than discounts, it’s getting things for free! Free shipping will significantly help you push your online sales. And there’s arguably no better place to advertise a #freeshipping deal (see what we did there?) than on social media. “You’ll be tickled with how many new ‘likes’ and followers you can get from this promotion, not to mention the boost in sales,” writes Marie.

5. Generate Leads through Giveaways. Speaking of giving things away for free, Marie reminds us that free giveaways are excellent ways to generate new leads. Although her article is holiday season-based, the entire giveaway idea works wonders all year round. At Synergy Marketing, our many years of experience providing Canadian business owners with top-of-the-line promotional products have taught us this.

5 More Awesome Fall Promotions Ideas

Posted in Synergy Suggestions on 02.09.14 by John Meloche

Depositphotos_4102435_xsWelcome to fall everyone! Okay, so it’s not fall yet. Here, at Synergy Marketing, we’re certainly hoping that the summer season lives up to its reputation and continues to provide us with warm and sunny days for at least another month. However, in the business world, the beginning of September means that it’s time to turn over a new leaf. Like what we did there? It’s time to recognize the beginning of the fall season in the ways that businesses are promoted.

Ideas as small as decorating your place of business with colourful fallen leaves and as big as throwing special sales events to acknowledge the various holidays throughout the fall can be utilized to your advantage. In yesterday’s blog, we took a look at a few great ideas offered up by Sarah Matista of Webs.com. She writes that recognizing the beginning of the school season as well as Halloween, Thanksgiving and even “You’re Welcome Day” is important.

In today’s blog, we’ll review a few more of her awesome ideas to get your business on the right track to raking in the dough all season long. Like what we did there, too? Raking? Not sure what is up with all the puns today, but perhaps it’s because we’re so excited! A new season brings about an entirely new energy to the ways in which customers like to shop. So here are five more ideas to help with your fall promotions.

1. Small Business Saturday. This may be another one of those “never heard of it before” special days. According to Matista, November 29th marks a day when small business owners should be promoting their own “Small Business Saturday” promotion. Circle it on your calendar, she insists. Clearly, you have many options as to what you can do with this day. Consider running a contest in order to attract as many new clients as you can.

2. Customer Appreciation Sale. As we mentioned in yesterday’s blog, thanking your customers is always an excellent idea. The more you show your appreciation, the more loyal they are likely to be. “The holiday season is a natural fit for a Customer Appreciation Sale,” believes Matista, “Show your customers some love with a special promo code or an opportunity to join a loyalty program.”

3. BOGO Sale. “What is a BOGO sale?” you may be asking yourself. It’s all about offering a “Buy One Get One” type of deal, according to Matista. Now which customer doesn’t enjoy a good bargain? When you give your customers the ability to get more ‘bangs for their bucks’, they’re bound to be happy about it. Matista admits that such a sale isn’t necessarily fall-themed, but it can work excellently in clearing out older inventory.

4. 24-Hour Sale. “Also not specific to fall, but nonetheless effective, is the good old 24-hour sale,” she continues, “This catchy title is easy to design around, and it creates a surprisingly motivating sense of urgency for your audience. Make sure to send reminders toward the end of the sale that announce it’s ‘ending soon!’” This is a great way to generate excitement about your brand. You’ll have customers visiting you all throughout the season and well into the winter.

5. Game of Thrones. Here’s an interesting one! Are you a “Game of Thrones” fan? Many people seem to love this show. Matista is apparently one of them. “If you (and your customers, of course) are into ‘Game of Thrones’, there is no shame in putting out a ‘Winter is Coming’ promotion,” she writes, “After all…it is.” And that’s true. Perhaps, one of the best ways to promote your business in the fall is to prepare your customers for the winter!

We’re back in the office today after an awesome Labour Day long weekend. So, to order your great promo gifts to begin your new fall promotion, call us up at 1-877-748-9884 today!

5 Great Ways To Promote Your Business This Fall

Posted in Synergy Suggestions on 01.09.14 by John Meloche

Autumn discountYep. It’s that time of year people. And although we certainly can’t call it the official end of summer just yet, September is here. Let us begin by saying that we certainly hope that you’re enjoying your last long weekend of the summer. Labour Day weekend is often one that is widely celebrated throughout Canada, as Canadians utilize it to do all they can to enjoy what’s left of “vacation season”.

The kids are about to head back to school and the weather (sadly) is about to get cooler. That doesn’t mean that things should be cooling off for your business though. In fact, the changing of the season means that you should be coming up with ways to heat things up! Although we have until the 22nd to enjoy the technical definition of “summer”, the beginning of September is the start of a whole other season.

It’s the time of year when business owners must consider how to promote their businesses for the fall. We’ve blogged about this a few times over the past month, but now is the time to put your plans into action. Thankfully, Sarah Matista of Webs.com has offered us some assistance by providing some great ideas for how small business owners can promote their brands throughout the fall. In today’s blog, we’ll take a look at her first five.

1. Back-to-school promotions. This one should be pretty obvious, right? If you haven’t started any back-to-school promotions as of yet, you’re already behind. But as Matista points out, “it’s not too late to run some creative promos around getting the house to yourself, vacations being over, or even just generic back-to-school savings.” Remember to keep in mind everyone that back-to-school promotions may appeal to: students, parents and teachers especially.

2. First day of fall promotion. According to Matista, the first day of fall is September 23rd. That means that you have a little bit of time to start up a great promotion for this date. She advises that you consider themes that incorporate the changing of the leaves and the seasons turning. Perhaps, a “Fall Into Savings” event is in order. Many people love the fall. Be sure to appeal to those who believe the new season is worth celebrating.

3. Halloween. This is usually at the top of the list of “favourite fall holidays”. And while it’s not actually an official holiday, Halloween is always something that many people enjoy celebrating. If you’re not incorporating any Halloween ideas into your fall promotions, you’re simply not trying. It’s a no-brainer. As Matista puts it, “thinking of a promotion around Halloween is as easy as taking candy from a baby.”

4. Thanksgiving. Joining Halloween as a “favourite fall holiday” is Thanksgiving. “If you work in the hospitality and restaurant scene, Thanksgiving promotions will come naturally,” writes Matista, “If you need a little help with ideas, consider puns around gobbling up savings, and maybe some sort of ‘leftovers’ clearance if you work in the retail industry.” You may also want to take the opportunity to thank your customers by handing out free promo gifts!

5. You’re Welcome Day. In addition to thanking your customers, Matista suggests an original way to say “you’re welcome” as well. She writes that “You’re Welcome Day” is actually an official holiday that falls on November 28th. “This one would be well suited for a business with a somewhat tongue-in-cheek or irreverent brand identity,” she writes, “I’m envisioning a graphic posted on social media that just says ‘Everything 50% through Sunday. You’re welcome.’”

Be sure to check back for tomorrow’s blog as we provide insight on five other great ideas for fall promotions listed by Matista! We’ll be back in the Synergy Marketing offices bright and early as well. To order your great promo gifts to begin your new fall promotion, call us up at 1-877-748-9884.

5 Ideas For Keeping Sales Strong This Fall

Posted in Synergy Suggestions on 12.08.14 by John Meloche

Sunny autumn foliageSummer is not over. We repeat. Summer is not over! However…business owners really have no choice but to think ahead. And that means that the fall season has practically begun. Recently, we blogged about the importance of getting your place of business “back to school”-ready. But, of course, the “back to school” season only marks the beginning of fall. There are many different things that you can do to prepare now so that your business is successful when the season comes.

Are you ready for fall? On Intuit.com, Rachel Hartman reminds us that when the kids head back to school next month, many parents will already be thinking about such things as upcoming Thanksgiving and Halloween festivities. So she offers up some ideas to business owners to help keep their sales strong throughout the fall season. In today’s blog, we’ll take a look at our favourite five.

1. Go back to school again. “Offer school-centered deals and promotions,” writes Hartman. She suggests that it’s a good idea to get students involved in the promotion of your business. Clothing retailers, for example, may want to look to hiring students to wear particular articles of clothing on campus. That way, they essentially become walking billboards for your brand. Naturally, you may also want to get going on your “back to school” sales if you haven’t already.

2. Support local sports. Hartman also suggests that you contact local schools in order to sponsor games or tournaments that will be taking place throughout the school year. By being a sponsor, she notes, you’ll be able to offer special deals to spectators and fans, not to mention pass out product samples or promotional gifts to those in attendance. As you know, promo gifts are great ways to make great impressions!

3. Think themes. Although the end of summer is often a bummer for most people, there’s no reason to not embrace the new season. Many people love the fall, especially considering the wonderful changing of the colours that take place in nature. “If you have a storefront, consider putting up decorations in fall colours,” suggests Hartman, “Spas and restaurants could offer special seasonal menus.”

4. Say “thank you.” This tip is very much in keeping with the Synergy Marketing philosophy of handing out promotional items to boost business. It’s all about showing your appreciation and gratitude towards those who support your brand. There are several other ways to say “thank you”, of course. Hartman even suggests that you send out Thanksgiving cards to your favourite customers, along with notes that encourage them to visit your store.

5. Offer space to community groups. “If you have extra room in your business, consider opening it up to local residents,” writes Hartman, “For instance, if you run a cafe or a business centre, try hosting study sessions for students. If you own a youth fitness centre, offer some of your space for PTA meetings during the week.” Giving back to the community, by the way, always presents a win-win situation for your brand.

For business owners, the season of promoting never stops. But when the natural seasons go through their transitions, it’s always good to reflect such changes at your business. It gets people into the spirit of the season. And the more people talk about your business, the better. As you know, promo gifts are great ways to get that talk going. Be sure to contact us at 1-877-748-9884 to order your promo gifts today!

Filling Out Our Fall Marketing Idea List

Posted in Synergy Suggestions on 19.09.13 by John Meloche

fallTreeIn yesterday’s blog, we discussed a few ideas that entrepreneurs can use to help boost sales during the fall season. We’re practically there already! School is in and the weather simply isn’t as hot as it was just a few weeks ago. It’s time to accept that summer is over. With that said, it’s important to welcome the fall season by having your store celebrate it in various ways.

As Rachel Hartman points out on the Intuit Small Business Blog, there are a variety of ways that you can use the fall season to your advantage at your place of business. Decorate your store, offer season-related discounts, incorporate students in your company and support local sports teams and community groups – these are just a few of those ways. In today’s blog, we’ll review a few more.

Say “thank you.” The autumn season is, after all, a season of giving thanks. With Thanksgiving coming up next month, you may want to break out the thank you cards early. Give them out to customers either in person or by mail. Handing out promotional products, as you’re likely well aware, is also a great way to say “thank you”. For decades, promo gifts have proven to build customer loyalty.

They are your ways of showing appreciation to those who support your business. Of course, you can do this all year round. But with Thanksgiving coming up, you may want to tie in your promo gift to your “Thank You” promotion which may also include special discounts on seasonal items. By the way, your thank you notes and promo gifts help to get you referrals as well!

Offer space to community groups. Writes Hartman, “if you have extra room in your business, consider opening it up to local residents. For instance, if you run a cafe or a business center, try hosting study sessions for students. If you own a youth fitness center, offer some of your space for PTA meetings during the week. As well, make special deals available for those who come in.”

This is a great way to generate more interest in your business from audiences that may not generally visit you. Offering discounts to those visitors is also a great way to keep them coming back. This fall, you’ll want to do all you can to introduce your company to new people. Growing your business during the fall will pay off mightily once the holiday shopping season comes along.

Keep customers in the loop. Offer your expertise. Give advice. Show your clients you care. Keep them informed about the many different things going on with your business. But also, keep them informed of things are that going on in your community. This will help your brand have more a “family friendly” feel to it. You’ll be making friends, not just ties to new customers.

This goes a long way with customers because it will help them to build their trust in you. It doesn’t hurt to be liked by the people who come into your store. In fact, it is what you should be aiming for all the time anyway. This tip, of course, doesn’t have to be relegated to your fall promotions only. Keep it, as well as the others discussed in our recent blogs, in mind all year long!

Fall Into Some New Fall Marketing Ideas

Posted in Synergy Suggestions on 18.09.13 by John Meloche

autumnAlthough summer doesn’t officially come to an end until this weekend, it’s pretty much done. The chill is already in the air and any day now, those leaves are going to start changing colour. For your business, that means the ways in which you promote have to change as well. It may not yet be time to start putting up Christmas decorations, but times are certainly changing.

In many stores, Halloween displays are already up. Although the annual spooky celebration is still over a month away, the displays demonstrate the need for business owners to think ahead. On the Intuit Small Business Blog, Rachel Hartman writes that the fall season presents a number of opportunities to entrepreneurs. She offers up several ideas on how to utilize the changing of the seasons to boost business.

Go back to school again. Okay, so maybe you graduated a long time ago and have no intention of returning back to the classroom. After all, you are in business for yourself so when would you have time for classes? In actuality, Hartman recommends that you offer “school-centered deals and promotions”. You may even want to consider hiring students who may be able to help you reach a younger market.

Then again, maybe taking a class isn’t so bad an idea after all. Many long time business owners get a little too caught up in their own way of thinking simply because they’ve been in business for many years. It doesn’t hurt to learn something new. There must have been advances in your industry since the day you first opened your doors. Expand your mind and knowledge of your business world and see if it doesn’t help.

Support local sports. Get involved in local schools as well as youth sports leagues and see if you can sponsor a team. School is in, obviously, so the more noticeable your brand is among the student population, the more young customers you are bound to attract. As well, you may want to have your business name and logo don the sweater of a local sports team.

Consider this. Every game played is an advertisement for your brand. During the game, you may want to be present so that you can offer special deals for team members and fans, suggests Hartman. “Pass out samples, coupons, or free T-shirts to those who come to the game,” she writes. Doing so is an awesome way to attract members of your community to your company.

Think themes. There are a variety of fall themes that you can celebrate at your business. Fall colours are loved by most whether they enjoy the cooler weather or not. Give your place of business that “warm and cozy” fall feeling by putting up season-minded decorations. As well, come up with special seasonal sales where your prices “fall back”. This will inject some new life into your store!

“I actually like celebrating Halloween early,” shared one of our clients earlier this week, “I get the scary stuff up and it intrigues people to take a look around my store. They end up asking questions about where I got certain decorations and those conversations end up turning into ways that I can help them with something I’m selling. It’s fun and it’s good for drumming up business.”

Back-To-School Marketing Done Right

Posted in Promotional Products, Synergy Suggestions on 04.09.13 by John Meloche

2175909SchoolSuppliesAll across Canada, the kids have returned to school this week. For many people, back-to-school time marks the official ending of the summer. And for many business owners, it marks an entirely new way to promote their businesses. You don’t have to sell school supplies or even clothing to attract back-to-school shoppers. At least that’s what Susan Ward of About.com believes.

She writes that there are a number of back-to-school marketing ideas that can help just about any small business increase its sales. The beginning of September, she notes, is actually one of the biggest retail seasons of the year. Remember, of course, that back-to-school time doesn’t just bring about a change of pace for children. But parents are also beginning to experience whole new schedules.

Do What Is Tried And True. Ward reminds us that the entire back-to-school experience is a yearly tradition. There are some no-brainer ideas that business owners can always implement for the beginning of the school season. If you sell products that are school-related, then coming up with marketing ideas to boost awareness about your brand should come natural to you. Use what has worked for you in the past.

This is also an excellent time of year to hand out promotional gifts that are school related. At Synergy Marketing, we carry a pretty cool line of promotional rulers, pens and mouse pads that can certainly come in handy for your young academic customers. Our experience has shown us that providing your customers with these gifts help to keep bringing them back throughout the school year.

You don’t just have to sell or give out school supplies, however. Ward reminds us again that parents need services to help them with the back-to-school season. Hair salons, for example, should offer discounts for both kids and their moms and dads so that they are all looking sharp! Do you run a concierge or errand service than can help customers with their back-to-school shopping? You get the idea.

Come Up With Back-To-School Tie-Ins. Okay, so what if your business has no relationship to back-to-school shopping whatsoever? You can still create tie-ins to promote whatever it is you sell. Ward offers up a number of examples. If you work in the food industry, you may want to offer up special deals on “healthy school lunches” or special “student meals”.

If you sell cleaning products, you may want to offer a package to students needing help cleaning up their dorm rooms. Do you own a repair shop of some kind? Let’s suppose you fix watches. Create a special “be on time for school” deal, suggests Ward. The possibilities, as you can tell, are endless.

Be sure to check back for tomorrow’s blog as we continue to provide your back-to-school marketing strategy ideas.
