Parents, now more than ever, will be looking for special deals to ensure that the lives of their children – and their own as well – are made easier during this yearly transition. In yesterday’s blog, we began looking at some back-to-school marketing ideas, as outlined by Susan Ward on About.com. She writes that such ideas don’t have to cater to students alone. In fact, your marketing plans don’t have to revolve around school supplies either. Keep in mind that lifestyles are changing and schedules are rearranging. So how can your business accommodate?

Don’t Forget The Parents. “Don’t limit your marketing ideas to kids,” says Ward. There are many things that parents have likely been putting off until the beginning of September. With the kids in school, it opens up their days to accomplish things that the summer did not permit. Can your business take advantage of this? Personal care businesses certainly can, says Ward.

Hairdressers, manicurists and massage therapists can all offer discounts on “they’ve-gone-back to school” appointments, she writes. Restaurants can offer special menus to encourage patrons to come in for lunch “without the kids”. Fitness studios and gyms could also offer special workouts and sessions during “now that you have time” school hours.

Targeting the needs of parents is a concept that is sometimes forgotten in the back-to-school planning of many a business owner. It is strange when you come to think about it. After all, don’t parents do most of the spending, anyways? Keep in mind that your promotion should probably run right through September. You’re bound to attract more customers by acknowledging the season.

Be A Teacher’s Pet. You don’t have to be in school to get on the good side of teachers. Ward points out that they are a great group of people to target with your back-to-school promotions. Clearly, September brings about great changes in the lives of teachers. They need your attention too! So what can you do so that your business is able to make the lives of teachers easier?

“Car detailing business could offer a special package for teachers only,” suggests Ward, “An educational supply store could offer teachers memberships or discount cards. A restaurant could offer teachers only a free dinner entrée during the first month of school.” Of course, there are so many different ways to promote to teachers, parents and students. It just takes a bit of creativity.
