Targeting Resolutions For A Successful New Year

Posted in Synergy Suggestions on 11.12.13 by John Meloche

New Year 2014 Business Goal2014 is around the corner. So naturally, this is the time of year when people begin making New Year’s Resolutions. Among the classic choices are to exercise, stop smoking and to eat a healthier diet. And while those are all admirable resolutions – provided that they’re stuck to – there are some other important ones that business owners need to consider.

On About.com, Susan Ward writes of the various New Year’s Resolutions that can help your business excel. For the past couple of days, we have been blogging about her ideas. In today’s blog, we’ll continue our look at her list in hopes that it will help your brand to achieve new and never-before-reached successes in 2014. We think we’ve found some pretty good ideas!

Give something back to your community. This will never be a bad idea. Let’s first discuss the primary benefit to this tip. Giving of yourself in generous and thoughtful ways will provide immeasurable help and assistance to those who need it the most. This is especially true during the holiday season, so this is a tip you may want to consider before the new year rolls around.

Secondly, the amazing impression that your community service will provide for your business will pay dividends well into the future. Advises Ward, you should make your new year one when you “serve on a committee, be a mentor, volunteer, or make regular donations to the groups in your community that try to make the place you live a better place.”

Put time for you on your calendar. Even while considering all of the marketing strategies that we have been suggesting over the past couple of days, it is still important that you make time for yourself. Believe it or not, that is a marketing strategy itself. You need time to recharge and refresh, Ward insists. Having a healthy work-life balance is integral to running your business right.

“All work and no play is a recipe for mental and physical disaster,” writes Ward, “So if you have trouble freeing up time to do the things you enjoy, write time regularly into your schedule to ‘meet with yourself’ and stick to that commitment.” After all, no one said that you shouldn’t enjoy your work! And being able to enjoy your life because of the work you do is one way to guarantee that.

Set realistic goals. Business owners are known for their goal-setting skills. In 2014, be sure to set goals that you believe will be achieved. The last thing you want is to add a stress to your team based on a target that is far-fetched. Give your staff the confidence that working together will truly bring about great results. Don’t promote “unrealistic pipe dreams that are so far out of reach they only lead to frustration,” says Ward.

At the same time, you don’t want to set goals that are far too easy to reach. Each goal you set should be a challenge. You should work towards excelling past your previous accomplishments to ensure business growth. You also want to give your team something to strive for. Simply meeting the goals that you’ve set in the past will make your business culture one of complacency.

In tomorrow’s blog, we’ll conclude our look at Ward’s list of New Year’s Resolution suggestions for business owners.
